FAQ

What is Dan Level %?

The share of your moves that held dan-level strength. A guess counts when it beats the dan's actual move or lands within a small tolerance of it (1%), measured by win rate analysis. It's recorded when you finish a game, and your best result on each game is the one that counts.

What is free?

Two complete 1 Dan games from the first launch. Score 60% or better (best-ever) on both and the two 2 Dan games open; do the same there for the 3 Dan pair, and again for the 4 Dan pair — eight free games in all. Every unlock is permanent. The first 50 practice problems at each rank are free too.

What does Road to Shodan Pro include, and what does it cost?

All 100 games from 1 Dan to 5 Dan, the 5 Dan tier, and every practice problem at every rank. It is a one-time purchase of $19.99 (US; other storefronts vary) — no subscription — and it works with Family Sharing.

Something is wrong, or you have an idea.

Email us. This is a new app made by one Go player, and every report is read. A screenshot and the game name are the fastest way to get a fix.

I bought Pro and it isn't unlocked.

Tap any locked game to open the Pro sheet, then tap Restore Purchases. Use the same Apple Account you bought it with (or, with Family Sharing, one in the same family group). If that doesn't work, email us.

Where does my data live? Can I sync between devices?

Everything is stored on your device only. There is no cloud sync yet — it's on the list, and because we don't run servers, it would use your private iCloud if we build it.

The analysis says my move was bad but I think it was fine.

The grading comes from KataGo analysis at high playouts, but no engine is gospel and tolerances are deliberately forgiving. If a specific position seems wrongly graded, email a screenshot — genuinely, we investigate these.

What is "shodan"?

The first dan rank (初段) — the Go equivalent of a black belt. The traditional milestone every improving kyu player is climbing toward. Hence the name.
